Raul Rodriguez is a real-estate developer, philanthropist, and business-owner based in Miami, FL. Basically, he knows a thing or two about "goals"...
In this post, we'll cover the three steps to actively planing goals outlined in his talk at Florida International University's Honors College.
Step 1: Visualize your Goals
This is the step that most people start, but never fully develop.
In the past 13 years, Rodriguez has created 2 charity foundations, a statewide healthcare transportation company, and has developed several multi-million dollar projects for senior affordable housing. However, none of this would have been possible if he hadn't first written everything out.
When discussing the subject of goals Rodriguez simply put, "Write 'em down on a piece of paper."
In order to take a step forward in your career, life goals, or any endeavor, what's necessary is a clear picture of what you have in mind. In the case of Raul, that meant writing a short list of the impact he wants to make in his lifetime and where he wants to be.
To go even further, Rodriguez adds that the most important thing to consider about visualizing your goals is that it is an ongoing process. Rather than just take the time to write that list down and never see it again, one should find a good place to frame them, hang them up, and make sure they see those goals everyday.
This simple act of intention is the foundation for the next step:
Step 2: Verbalize your Goals
A clear picture of the impact you want to make is only the start, the next is using your vision to plan out specific action.
For Raul, this takes shape in the form of an annual list, sort of like a set of New Year resolutions...
"I look at my list and create a list of goals for the year to help me realize my vision. Then, I put all the year's goals on a spreadsheet with a clear deadline.", said Rodriguez.
Rather than let our visions go to waste, the next step is to make an action plan on how to reach your vision, one step at a time. Raul's method of prioritizing a goal every month with a clear deadline is also a great way to turn your goals into actionable plans.
Step 3: Realize your Goals
The next step is... to do it! The importance of visualizing and verbalizing is great and all, but it's only useful if you have the readiness to put your plans into practice.
According to Rodriguez, there's no secret to his success. Work ethic, dedication, and consistency is what make goals into reality, as his prolific career in philanthropy and entrepreneurship shows.
Whether your goals are big or small; impactful or modest; taking charge in how you visualize, verbalize, and realize them is what counts.
